Nurturing Nature

Lankan culture is beautifully represented through the local craftsmen and materials used, in a light, contemporary manner.

Rainwater harvesting for use in our vegetable garden and landscapes

Rainwater is thoughtfully harvested from every rooftop, channelled into water shells discreetly tucked beneath each villa and placed in key locations across the property. This precious resource is then used to nourish our vegetable gardens and landscaped grounds, sustaining the land with nature’s own rhythm.

Garbage segregation – dry/wet and recycling

At Malabar Hill, our approach to waste management is both meticulous and mindful. All waste is carefully sorted into dry, wet, recyclable, and compostable categories—ensuring that each item is directed to its most responsible end. Compostable materials are finely ground to accelerate decomposition, allowing us to return nutrients to the soil more efficiently and support our garden’s growth.

Rainforest rewilding initiative

We aim to restore and regenerate an acre or two of our hills by growing as many rainforest trees and varieties as possible over the next few years. This initiative should create an amazing and bio-diverse rainforest habitat in the future and invite you to participate in this program by planting a sapling.

Small Cats Advocacy Research

In collaboration with the Small Cat Advocacy & Research Project, we’re helping protect Sri Lanka’s elusive wild small cats. Camera traps on the property have recorded species like the Chevrotain, Indian Civet, and Asian Palm Civet, all vital to the local ecosystem. The research findings will go into creating awareness among the local communities on conservation of wild-life and endangered species.

Nature Publications

In collaboration with renowned naturalist and wildlife enthusiast Gehan De Silva, we sponsored the publication of his latest book. We have also now commenced the printing a series of check list leaflets showcasing the Birds, Butterflies & Dragon Flies, Trees & Plants of Sri Lanka that are also available for other establishments to duplicate in an effort to encourage more appreciation of the nature around us.

Discarded linen and waterproof materials

Reusable linen and waterproof materials, once retired from guest use, are donated to the SOS Animal Shelter in Ahangama. Caring for over 2,000 dogs daily, the shelter repurposes these items in its hospital and recovery spaces—offering comfort and support to animals in need.
