Sustainability
At Malabar Hill we respect and celebrate Sri Lanka’s diverse natural beauty, holding the protection of that as our highest priority, while providing a sustainable and beautiful place from which to experience it.
The mindset has been created by founders Lawson Johnston, a man passionate both about design and the natural world, and Dominic Scriven, a firm believer that luxurious hospitality and wildlife preservation can go hand in hand.
Malabar Hill is vehicle free with the exception of electric tuk tuks. We use organic, home grown and local ingredients for all menus and are entirely single-use plastic free. We consistently support our local community, via farming initiatives and by helping protect the surrounding natural environment. We believe that experience and understanding of the natural world will encourage generations in this approach.
Our more extensive sustainable operations include:
- A Bio cell sewage treatment unit in each individual villa
- Rainwater harvesting processes to be used in our vegetable garden and landscapes
- Solar powered hot water in all villas – Electric heaters in place for backup
- Garbage segregation – dry/wet and recycling
- Salt water chlorinated pools – Main pool and in all villas
- Refillable glass bottles in all villas – Refilled and sealed industrially
Community
We take immense pride in our commitment to empowering and uplifting our local community, by spearheading various home gardening initiatives, generating employment opportunities, and preserving the natural environment, to name a few. All while fostering a culture of sustainable development and growth.
Home Gardens
At our heart, we’re committed to cultivating a sustainable community. That’s why we’re proud to support local residents by providing them with everything they need to grow their own produce. From seeds to soil, we offer it all. Plus, we happily purchase their harvests to ensure everyone thrives. We encourage them to grow and sell any surplus they create to others.
Community Team Members
We believe in giving back to the community that has welcomed us with open arms. That’s why we prioritize hiring local talent whenever possible. From tuk-tuk drivers to maintenance workers, we ensure that our team is comprised of passionate individuals who share our values. After all, it takes a village to create an unforgettable experience.
Empowering women through Batik
We’re thrilled to announce the construction of our new batik producing home industry set up, where we’ll be empowering local women by providing them with the training and tools necessary to create beautiful, high-quality fabrics. By offering employment opportunities, we hope to make a meaningful impact on the community and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of the region.
